Karen Short Bio
Karen Gonzalez is a NYC-based vocalist from Colorado Springs, Colorado, whose sound blends softness, control, and emotional clarity. Her early years in the Colorado Springs Children’s Chorale, performing works like Mozart’s Solemn Vespers, instilled a lasting sense of discipline and connection to ensemble music. She later earned a degree in Music Business with an emphasis in Vocal Jazz Studies and a Master’s in Arts Management from The New School, shaping both her artistic voice and her understanding of the industry. Now developing her voice within New York City’s jazz community, she performs regularly in intimate settings across the city, most often alongside guitarist Ravi Sharma. With a foundation in both performance and arts management, Karen brings intention, professionalism, and care to every collaboration. As she continues to grow her presence as an artist, her work invites presenters and audiences alike to be part of an emerging voice, one grounded in tradition and steadily coming into its own.

Karen Gonzalez is a vocalist, creative professional, and arts administrator from Colorado Springs, Colorado, now based in New York City. Known for a sound that blends softness, control, and emotional clarity, her work is rooted in a deep respect for ensemble music, storytelling, and intentional artistry. She began singing in school choir programs across Colorado Springs, including Queen Palmer Elementary, Turman Elementary, Panorama Middle School, Sierra High School, and Widefield High School. These early experiences grounded her love of music in community and consistency. She later joined the Colorado Springs Children’s Chorale, where she sang from 2008 to 2014 and first encountered the discipline and responsibility of high-level music-making. Through the chorale, Karen performed major works including Carl Orff’s *Carmina Burana*, Morten Lauridsen’s *Lux Aeterna*, and Mozart’s *Solemn Vespers* alongside the Colorado Springs Philharmonic. She also performed in The Broadmoor Christmas Show under the direction of composer Ken Miller, sharing the stage with Jim Salestrom and Linda Purl. These formative experiences continue to shape her approach to music today, instilling a lasting sense of discipline, collaboration, and care. Karen went on to study at the University of Northern Colorado, where she earned a Bachelor of Music in Music Business with an emphasis in Vocal Jazz Studies, along with an Arts Entrepreneurship Certificate and additional studies in theatre. While there, she performed with ensembles including Women’s Glee, Concert Choir, Verve Vocal Jazz Ensemble, and Vocalese Vocal Jazz Ensemble, as well as a cappella groups she helped build, Vocal Iron and 11th Ave A Cappella. Her performance experience included major choral works such as Verdi’s *Requiem*, Mendelssohn’s *Elijah*, J.S. Bach’s *Wachet Auf, Ruft Uns Die Stimme* (Cantata 140), and Mozart’s *Mass in C Minor*. In 2017, she performed with the Grammy Award–winning ensemble Roomful of Teeth and remained actively engaged in community-centered performances throughout Greeley. In 2019, she joined the choir for Sarah Brightman’s *Hymn World Tour* as an Alto I under the direction of Olli Cunningham, performing at the Paramount Theatre in Denver, Colorado. This experience further strengthened her versatility and professionalism on larger stages. Following her undergraduate studies, Karen moved to New York City to attend The New School, where she earned a Master’s degree in Arts Management and Entrepreneurship in 2021. A recipient of the Dreyfus Award, she graduated with a 3.8 GPA and was recognized for both her academic excellence and her support of her peers. While at The New School, her studies with Nicki Richards helped refine her approach to performance and deepened her commitment to pursuing music more intentionally. In 2022, Karen joined The Unsung Collective under the direction of Tyrone Clinton Jr.. With the ensemble, she has performed at Alice Tully Hall and Lincoln Center as part of the Mostly Mozart Festival under the direction of Louis Langrée. The group also held a residency at CARA, performing Neo Muyanga’s A Mass of Cyborgs. Alongside her ensemble work, Karen is steadily building her presence as a soloist and collaborator within New York City’s music scene. She has performed at venues including Nublu, Abyssinian Baptist Church, Apollo Theater, Reverie Room, and Minton's Playhouse. She most often performs in intimate settings and collaborative formats, including her ongoing work with guitarist Ravi Sharma. In addition to her performance career, Karen works in arts administration and web design, supporting artists and organizations through marketing, digital strategy, and audience development. As Marketing Coordinator for The Unsung Collective, she has contributed to over $28,000 in revenue through her work in social media, website management, email marketing, and ticketing strategy. Continuing her artistic growth, Karen began coursework in 2024 toward a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Performance at City College of New York, studying under Suzanne Pittson and Brazilian jazz vocalist Jamile Staevie Ayres. Karen’s work is guided by a commitment to growth, collaboration, and intention. As she continues to develop her voice as an artist, she invites audiences, especially those connected to her Colorado roots, to be part of her journey at a formative moment.
Karen and Ravi Duo Bio
Karen Gonzalez and Ravi Sharma are a New York City–based voice and guitar duo blending jazz standards and Brazilian repertoire with warmth, intimacy, and ease. Their sound is rooted in deep listening and a shared sensitivity to phrasing, creating performances that feel both relaxed and intentional. Originally from Colorado Springs, Karen brings a clear, expressive vocal style shaped by her background in ensemble singing, while Ravi, originally from Seattle, is known for his fluid improvisation, nuanced accompaniment, and versatility across jazz and Brazilian styles. The duo first began collaborating in New York City, where a musical connection quickly developed into an ongoing creative partnership. Since then, they have performed in intimate settings across the city, building a sound defined by trust, subtle interplay, and a genuine love for the music. With a growing presence and an upcoming Colorado tour, Karen and Ravi invite audiences to experience a duo that feels both timeless and personal.
